Reading 1EX 20:1-17

In those days:
God delivered all these commandments:

“I, the LORD, am your God,
who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery.
You shall not have other gods besides me.
You shall not carve idols for yourselves
in the shape of anything in the sky above
or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth;
you shall not bow down before them or worship them.
For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God,
inflicting punishment for their fathers’ wickedness
on the children of those who hate me,
down to the third and fourth generation;
but bestowing mercy down to the thousandth generation
on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments.

“You shall not take the name of the LORD, your God, in vain.
For the LORD will not leave unpunished
him who takes his name in vain.

“Remember to keep holy the sabbath day.
Six days you may labor and do all your work,
but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD, your God.
No work may be done then either by you, or your son or daughter,
or your male or female slave, or your beast,
or by the alien who lives with you.
In six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth,
the sea and all that is in them;
but on the seventh day he rested.
That is why the LORD has blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.

“Honor your father and your mother,
that you may have a long life in the land
which the LORD, your God, is giving you.

“You shall not kill.

“You shall not commit adultery.

“You shall not steal.

“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house.
You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife,
nor his male or female slave, nor his ox or ass,
nor anything else that belongs to him.”

“Hear the parable of the sower.

what was sown in his heart.
The seed sown on rocky ground
is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy.
But he has no root and lasts only for a time.
When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word,
he immediately falls away.
The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word,
but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word
and it bears no fruit.
But the seed sown on rich soil
is the one who hears the word and understands it,
who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.”

READING I (odd years) Ex 16, 1-5.9-15
«I will make it rain for you bread from heaven»

After  passing  the Red Sea , the desert crossing begins. It will be a time of great trial, in which the lack of faith and the sins of the people are always in contrast, and the mercy and power of God on the other. The people get angry with Moses and  they think they are condemned to starve; but immediately Moses intercedes with God and He sends them the bread of heaven, the manna, as we are today the Eucharist, the true bread of heaven.
GOSPEL Mt 13: 1-9
«They will bear fruit a hundred for one»

Today we begin to read the passage from the Gospel of St. Matthew devoted to the parables, that is, to catechesis based on the contemplation of nature and the work in which men are concerned. Today we hear the parable of the sower, as if preparing the ground for the good harvest of the sowing that the Lord Himself will make. Vitality is in the seed, but the ground where it is to be sown must be prepared.
Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord.  He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit (Jeremiah 17:7-8; see also Psalm 1:3).

The shut mind and prejudiced hearer 
Jesus' parable of the sower is aimed at the hearers of his word. There are different ways of accepting God's word and they produce different kinds of fruit accordingly. There is the prejudiced hearer who has a shut mind. Such a person is unteachable and blind to what he or she doesn't want to hear. Then there is the shallow hearer. He or she fails to think things out or think them through; they lack depth. They may initially respond with an emotional reaction; but when it wears off their mind wanders to something else.

 

Reading 1EX 16:1-5, 9-15

The children of Israel set out from Elim, 
and came into the desert of Sin,
which is between Elim and Sinai,
on the fifteenth day of the second month
after their departure from the land of Egypt.
Here in the desert the whole assembly of the children of Israel
grumbled against Moses and Aaron.
The children of Israel said to them,
“Would that we had died at the LORD’s hand in the land of Egypt,
as we sat by our fleshpots and ate our fill of bread!
But you had to lead us into this desert
to make the whole community die of famine!”

Then the LORD said to Moses,
“I will now rain down bread from heaven for you.
Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily portion;
thus will I test them,
to see whether they follow my instructions or not.
On the sixth day, however, when they prepare what they bring in,
let it be twice as much as they gather on the other days.”

Then Moses said to Aaron, “Tell the whole congregation 
of the children of Israel:
Present yourselves before the LORD,
for he has heard your grumbling.”
When Aaron announced this to the whole assembly of the children of Israel,
they turned toward the desert, and lo,
the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud!
The LORD spoke to Moses and said,
“I have heard the grumbling of the children of Israel.
Tell them: In the evening twilight you shall eat flesh,
and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread,
so that you may know that I, the LORD, am your God.”

In the evening quail came up and covered the camp.
In the morning a dew lay all about the camp,
and when the dew evaporated, there on the surface of the desert
were fine flakes like hoarfrost on the ground.
On seeing it, the children of Israel asked one another, “What is this?”
for they did not know what it was.
But Moses told them,
“This is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat.”

Responsorial PsalmPS 78:18-19, 23-24, 25-26, 27-28

R. (24b) The Lord gave them bread from heaven.
They tempted God in their hearts
by demanding the food they craved.
Yes, they spoke against God, saying,
“Can God spread a table in the desert?”

Yet he commanded the skies above
and the doors of heaven he opened;
He rained manna upon them for food
and gave them heavenly bread. 
R. The Lord gave them bread from heaven.
Man ate the bread of angels,
food he sent them in abundance.

and by his power brought on the south wind.

And he rained meat upon them like dust,

GospelMT 13:1-9

On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea.
Such large crowds gathered around him
that he got into a boat and sat down,
and the whole crowd stood along the shore.
And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying:
“A sower went out to sow.
And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path,
and birds came and ate it up.
Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil.
It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep,
and when the sun rose it was scorched,
and it withered for lack of roots.
Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it.
But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit,
a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.
Whoever has ears ought to hear.”

Reading 1EX 14:21—15:1

Moses stretched out his hand over the sea,
and the LORD swept the sea
with a strong east wind throughout the night
and so turned it into dry land.
When the water was thus divided,
the children of Israel marched into the midst of the sea on dry land,
with the water like a wall to their right and to their left.

The Egyptians followed in pursuit;
all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and charioteers went after them
right into the midst of the sea.
In the night watch just before dawn
the LORD cast through the column of the fiery cloud
upon the Egyptian force a glance that threw it into a panic;
and he so clogged their chariot wheels
that they could hardly drive.
With that the Egyptians sounded the retreat before Israel,
because the LORD was fighting for them against the Egyptians.

Then the LORD told Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea,
that the water may flow back upon the Egyptians,
upon their chariots and their charioteers.”
So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, 
and at dawn the sea flowed back to its normal depth.
The Egyptians were fleeing head on toward the sea,
when the LORD hurled them into its midst.
As the water flowed back,
it covered the chariots and the charioteers of Pharaoh’s whole army
that had followed the children of Israel into the sea.
Not a single one of them escaped.
But the children of Israel had marched on dry land
through the midst of the sea,
with the water like a wall to their right and to their left.
Thus the LORD saved Israel on that day
from the power of the Egyptians.
When Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the seashore
and beheld the great power that the LORD
had shown against the Egyptians,
they feared the LORD and believed in him and in his servant Moses.

Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to the LORD:

I will sing to the LORD, for he is gloriously triumphant;
horse and chariot he has cast into the sea.

Eu venho, Senhor, à vossa presença: 
ficarei saciado ao contemplar a vossa glória. 

ORAÇÃO COLECTA 
Senhor nosso Deus, 
que mostrais aos errantes a luz da vossa verdade 
para poderem voltar ao bom caminho, 
concedei a quantos se declaram cristãos 
que, rejeitando tudo o que é indigno deste nome, 
sigam fielmente as exigências da sua fé. 
Por Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, vosso Filho, 
que é Deus convosco na unidade do Espírito Santo. 

LEITURA I (anos ímpares) Ex 3, 1-6.9-12 
«Apareceu-lhe o Anjo do Senhor numa chama ardente, 
do meio de uma sarça» 

Moisés, que havia de ser o instrumento de Deus para libertação do povo, recebe, nesta visão, a consciência da grandeza e do poder de Deus, ao mesmo tempo que do seu amor e solicitude pelo povo que Ele queria salvar. A transcendência de Deus não é obstáculo à sua solicitude de amor para com os homens, como Moisés o sentiu. Ao mesmo tempo, o encontro com Deus é sempre encontro que transforma a vida e leva à missão, como o foi para Moisés. 

Leitura do Livro do Êxodo 
Naqueles dias, Moisés apascentava o rebanho de Jetro, seu sogro, sacerdote de Madiã. Ao levar o rebanho para além do deserto, chegou ao monte de Deus, Horeb. Apareceu-lhe então o Anjo do Senhor numa chama ardente, do meio de uma sarça. Moisés olhou para a sarça, que estava a arder, e viu que a sarça não se consumia. Então disse Moisés: «Vou aproximar-me, para ver tão assombroso espectáculo: por que motivo não se consome a sarça?» O Senhor viu que ele se aproximava para ver. Então Deus chamou-o do meio da sarça: «Moisés, Moisés!» Ele respondeu: «Aqui estou!» Continuou o Senhor: «Não te aproximes. Tira as sandálias dos pés, porque o lugar que pisas é terra sagrada». E acrescentou: «Eu sou o Deus de teu pai, Deus de Abraão, Deus de Isaac e Deus de Jacob». Então Moisés cobriu o rosto, com receio de olhar para Deus. Disse-lhe o Senhor: «O clamor dos filhos de Israel chegou até Mim; vi também a violência com que os egípcios os oprimem. Agora põe-te a caminho, que Eu vou enviar-te ao faraó, para que tires do Egipto o meu povo, os filhos de Israel». Moisés disse a Deus: «Quem sou eu, para ir à presença do faraó e tirar do Egipto os filhos de Israel?». Deus respondeu-lhe: «Eu estarei contigo e este é o sinal de que fui Eu que te enviei: Quando tirares o povo do Egipto, adorareis a Deus neste monte».

EVANGELHO Mt 11, 25-27 
«Escondeste estas verdades aos sábios e inteligentes 
e as revelaste aos pequeninos» 

Os “pequeninos” são os discípulos de Jesus, as coisas que só a eles são reveladas são os mistérios do reino de Deus. De facto, o conhecimento destas verdades é fruto da revelação que Deus faz a quem escuta a sua palavra com o coração puro o sincero. O encontro com Deus só é possível se nos colocarmos diante d’Ele em atitude de verdade: verdade que é consciência da nossa profunda pobreza; verdade que é despojarmo-nos de nós mesmos, do nosso orgulho; verdade que é lançarmo-nos nos caminhos da fraternidade e da humanidade, como quem é capaz de se agarrar ao essencial, de viver “como se visse o invisível”. 

Evangelho de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo segundo São Mateus 
Naquele tempo, Jesus exclamou: «Eu Te bendigo, ó Pai, Senhor do céu e da terra, porque escondeste estas verdades aos sábios e inteligentes e as revelaste aos pequeninos. Sim, Pai, Eu Te bendigo, porque assim foi do teu agrado. Tudo Me foi dado por meu Pai. Ninguém conhece o Filho senão o Pai e ninguém conhece o Pai senão o Filho e aquele a quem o Filho o quiser revelar».

Comemoração dos beatos mártires Inácio de Azevedo, presbítero, e trinta e nove companheiros[1] da Companhia de Jesus, que se dirigiam para as missões do Brasil numa nau chamada «São Tiago», quando foram assaltados por um barco de piratas e passados ao fio da espada e golpes de lança em ódio à religião católica.

2.   Em Cartago, na hodierna Tunísia, o dia natal dos santos mártires cilitanos – Esperato, Narzal, Citino, Vetúrio, Félix, Aquilino, Letâncio, Januária, Generosa, Véstia, Donata e Segunda – que, por ordem do procônsul Saturnino, depois de terem professado a sua fé em Cristo, foram encerrados no cárcere; no dia seguinte, atados a um cepo, por perseverarem firmemente a declarar-se cristãos e a recusar prestar homenagem divina ao imperador, foram condenados à morte; e enquanto eram degolados ao fio da espada, de joelhos unanimemente davam graças a Deus.
3.   Em Amástris, na Paflagónia, na hodierna Turquia, São Jacinto, mártir.
4.   Em Sevilha, na Bética, província da Hispânia, as santas Justa e Rufina, virgens, que, aprisionadas pelo governador Diogeniano, depois de sofrerem cruéis suplícios, padeceram o cárcere, a fome e outras torturas: Justa morreu no cativeiro; Rufina, por continuar a profissão de fé no Senhor, foi decapitada.
5.   Em Milão, na Ligúria, hoje na Lombardia, região da Itália, Santa Marcelina, virgem, irmã de Santo Ambrósio, que em Roma, na basílica de São Pedro, recebeu do papa Libério o véu da consagração no dia da Epifania do Senhor.
6.   Em Roma, na igreja situada no monte Aventino, celebra-se um homem de Deus chamado Aleixo, que, segundo a tradição, deixou a sua casa que era rica, para se fazer pobre e viver incognitamente de esmolas.
7.   Em Auxerre, na Gália Lionense, actualmente na França, São Teodósio, bispo.
8.   Em Pavia, na Ligúria, hoje na Lombardia, região da Itália, Santo Enódio, bispo, que celebrou nos seus hinos as memórias e templos dos Santos e distribuiu generosamente os seus bens.
9*.   Em Deurne, próximo de Antuérpia, no Brabante, região da Austrásia, actualmente na Bélgica, São Fredegando, monge, provavelmente procedente da Irlanda, que foi companheiro de São Foilão e de outros missionários itinerantes.
10*.   No mosteiro de Winchelcombe, na Mércia, região da Inglaterra, São Kenelmo, príncipe da Mércia, que é considerado mártir.
11.   Em Roma, junto de São Pedro, São Leão IV, papa, defensor da cidade e apologista do primado de Pedro.
12.   Em Stockerau, no território de Viena, na Baviera, actualmente na Áustria, São Colomano, de origem irlandesa, que se fez peregrino em nome de Deus; ao dirigir-se para a Terra Santa, foi considerado um espia inimigo e, suspenso de uma árvore, alcançou a Jerusalém celeste.
13*.   Em Nitra, junto ao rio Waag, nos montes Cárpatos, em território da actual Eslováquia, os santos André ou Zoerardo e Bento, eremitas, que, vindos da Polónia para a Hungria a pedido de Santo Estêvão, seguiram num ermo do monte Zobor uma vida de rigorosa austeridade.
14.   Em Cracóvia, na Polónia, Santa Edviges, rainha, que, nascida na Hungria, recebeu o reino da Polónia e, tendo-se casado com Jaguelione, grão-duque da Lituânia, que recebeu no Baptismo o nome de Ladislau, com ele propagou a fé católica na Lituânia.
15*.   Em Paris, na França, as beatas Maria Madalena Claudina Lidoine (Teresa de Santo Agostinho) e quinze companheiras[2], virgens do Carmelo de Compiègne e mártires, que, durante a Revolução Francesa, por observarem fielmente a disciplina monástica foram condenadas à morte e, perante o patíbulo, renovaram as promessas da fé baptismal e os votos religiosos.

17*.   Em Leopoldov, na Eslováquia, o Beato Paulo Gojdich (Pedro Gojdich), bispo e mártir, que, sendo pastor dos fiéis no território de Presov, durante o domínio dum regime hostil a Deus, foi encarcerado e suportou tão graves tribulações que, depois de atrozes torturas, acolhendo fielmente as palavras de Cristo, com uma corajosa profissão de fé passou à vida eterna.
