GOSPEL, John (14, 6-14)
Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint John
Jesus the Way to the Father
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. 12 Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.
The Gospel of the Lord
REFLECTION
Today’s Gospel text tells of Jesus’ dialogue with Philip in relation to the Father’s house and the place that he is going to prepare for them.
Jesus affirms his identity “I am in the Father and the Father is in me”, He broadens this affirmation, explaining with clarity that He and the Father are One. He assures them that by believing this, “the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these” they will be able to continue His work and will glorify the Father if they do so in Jesus’ name.
This reading of the Gospel invites us to believe fully in the presence of the Father through the Son.
Jesus is the Way, the Truth and Life. Truly only through Him can we really know the Father because Jesus lives in perfect communion with the Father. Whoever knows Jesus, knows the Father and whoever knows the Father knows Jesus.
In light of the world that we live in, where the solutions to life’s problems have ready-made answers and other more attractive proposals, it becomes very difficult to see an appeal in Jesus’s word, His way and His truth.
Let us ask the Lord for the grace of true faith and the fulfilment of this yearning which is hidden in the mystery of Christ.
When everything seems difficult and insurmountable let us pray, let us talk to the Lord.
When all is well, let us pray and thank God, for the life we have. He alone can console, comfort and strengthen us. He will always show us the Way.
PRAYER
Holy Father You who sent Your Son into the World to show and light our path directly to You, make us obedient to His Word so that guided by Your Spirit, we may serve you in all that is righteous and further glorify You in Jesus’ name. Amen.
