A partir desse dia, decidiram matar Jesus.

GOSPEL, (John 11:45-56)

Jesus Christ GIF

Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint John.

The Plot to Kill Jesus

45 Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him. 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what he had done. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the council, and said, “What are we to do? This man is performing many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy both our holy place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not understand that it is better for you to have one man die for the people than to have the whole nation destroyed.” 51 He did not say this on his own, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but to gather into one the dispersed children of God. 53 So from that day on they planned to put him to death.54 Jesus therefore no longer walked about openly among the Jews, but went from there to a town called Ephraim in the region near the wilderness; and he remained there with the disciples.55 Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves. 56 They were looking for Jesus and were asking one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? Surely he will not come to the festival, will he?”

Reflection

The miracles performed by Jesus and in particular the great miracle of the resurrection of Lazarus, attracted many crowds “His simple way of communicating touched the hearts of those who listened to him”; They had already wanted to proclaim him king, declaring him the liberator of the nation. If it continued like this, the Romans would intervene and destroy the temple, something the Sanhedrin would not allow.

That is why the Sanhedrin decided to put Jesus to death. It was according to the high priest Caiaphas more advisable that one man should die for the people rather than an entire nation perish.

Caiaphas is unaware of the irony of his opportunistic prophesy. That the death of Jesus serves not his self-preserving prophesy but will actually fulfil Divine prophesy and serve to gather each and all of God’s children, scattered by their sin.

With his death, Jesus will give birth to a new family. All Christians united to reflect in communion with their Father, who is the core of their entire Christian community. Each practicing Christian both individually or as a community must take a critical position with regards to this materialistic society and use all means at their disposal to serve as leaven for their spiritual leaders. As St. Paul writes, Woe is me if I do not evangelize!

Let us show a living faith by serving God, selflessly and unselfishly. By adhering to Christ, one whom has been baptized must live a truly new life, impassioned by the spirit of Christ. The life of the baptismal faith is renewed when we each participate in building a community based on life, friendship and communion with God and each other.

PRAYER

We bless you, Father, because Christ died so that you might gather all your scattered children around you. Make us your home among men, so that everyone may know that you are our God.
