“As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love”

GOSPEL, John (15, 9-11)

Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint John

 Jesus the True Vine

As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.

REFLECTION

The central idea of today’s gospel is the disciple’s permanent union with Jesus through love and the fulfilment of his commandments.

The mutual love that the Father shares with the Son, passes from Christ to the disciple and from him to his brethren. Jesus says: “As the Father loved me, so I have loved you; remain in my love”.

How can we remain in the love of Christ?

“If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love; just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love “, says Jesus, because” he who loves me will keep my word”.

To love Jesus is to keep his commandments. The relationship between love and obedience is very similar; they support and complement each other. When love leads to sacrifice, it implies conforming one’s will to another, achieving a fusion of wills so that love grows and develops. St. John of the Cross-said: “Beloved in the beloved transformed”. Happiness is directly related to the capacity for sacrifice.

United in love and obedience creates a feeling of joy, in anticipation for the eternal happiness of loving and being loved,  which is why Christ communicates his joy to his disciples. “I told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy be full”.

Love generates happiness when it is totally free, that is, when it is completely free from selfishness and self-interest.

4 Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (1 Corinthians: 13, 4).

PRAYER

Grant us, Holy Father that we remain in the love of Jesus to bear abundant fruit of faith, peace and joy.

Lord Jesus, let us overflow with your joy of Spirit so that our happiness reaches its fullness in you and we may bear witness to others of your love and your joy. Amen.
