 0324 Quarta Feira da 5ª Semana da Quaresma 

“Se o Filho vos libertar, sereis realmente livres” (Jo 8, 31-42)
 
     Evangelho de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo segundo São João
 
     Naquele tempo, dizia Jesus aos judeus que tinham acreditado n’Ele: «Se  perman cerdes na minha palavra, sereis verdadeiramente meus discípulos, conhecereis a verdade e a verdade vos libertará». Eles responderam-Lhe: «Nós somos descendentes de Abraão e nunca fomos escravos de ninguém. Como é que Tu dizes: ‘Ficareis livres’?» Respondeu Jesus: «Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: Todo aquele que comete o pecado é escravo. Ora o escravo não fica para sempre em casa; o filho é que fica para sempre. Mas se o Filho vos libertar, sereis realmente homens livres. Bem sei que sois descendentes de Abraão; mas procurais matar-Me, porque a minha palavra não entra em vós. Eu digo o que vi junto de meu Pai e vós fazeis o que ouvistes ao vosso pai». Eles disseram: «O nosso pai é Abraão». Respondeu-lhes Jesus: «Se fôsseis filhos de Abraão, faríeis as obras de Abraão. Mas procurais matar-Me, a Mim que vos disse a verdade que ouvi de Deus. Abraão não procedeu assim. Vós fazeis as obras do vosso pai». Disseram-Lhe eles: «Nós não somos filhos ilegítimos; só temos um pai, que é Deus». Respondeu-lhes Jesus: «Se Deus fosse o vosso Pai, amar-Me-íeis, porque saí de Deus e d’Ele venho. Eu não vim de Mim próprio; foi Ele que Me enviou».
 
—– Reflexão
 
O Evangelho apresenta o tema da liberdade, e da verdadeira filiação do homem a respeito de Deus Pai vistos na perspetiva de Abraão. Jesus declara que uma fé herdada, não é suficiente para a verdadeira liberdade e para a filiação legítima. Para ser livres não basta ser da linhagem de Abraão, “Asseguro-vos que quem comete pecado é escravo. E se o Filho vos faz livres, sereis realmente livres”.
 
Cristo liberta-nos pela sua palavra, “Se permanecerdes na minha palavra, sereis de verdade discípulos meus, conhecereis a verdade, e a verdade vos fará livres”. A verdade liberta e a mentira escraviza Temos de optar entre uma e outra.
 
O próprio Cristo é a verdade que nos torna livres da mentira, e do pecado. É Ele que nos estabelece na autêntica linhagem de Abraão pela fé; faz-nos filhos de Deus e irmãos dos homens. Para isto temos de guardar a sua palavra; Caso contrário permaneceremos escravos do pecado e da mentira, Os filhos autênticos de Abraão, os verdadeiramente livres, são os que imitam a sua fé e as suas atitudes diante de Deus, como fez Cristo.
 
Neste mundo em que a pessoa se sente ameaçada pela sua liberdade em que aparece todo o tipo de manipulação … Só com critérios evangélicos e uma fé madura é capaz de testemunhar com a sua vida e conduta que o seu único Pai e Senhor é o Deus de Jesus Cristo.
 
Os mártires e os santos de todos os tempos atestam a afirmação de Jesus no evangelho de hoje: “Se permanecerdes na minha palavra, sereis de verdade meus discípulos, conhecereis a verdade, e a verdade vos fará livres”.

Deus Pai queremos seguir Cristo pelo caminho da cruz que nos levará a cantar-te o hino de bênção e vitória com todos os libertados pela verdade que é Cristo.

PRAYING LENT:“If the Son sets you free, you will be truly free”

 True Disciples

31 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, ‘You will be made free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, and everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36  So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you look for an opportunity to kill me, because there is no place in you for my word. 38 I declare what I have seen in the Father’s presence; as for you, you should do what you have heard from the Father.”

Jesus and Abraham

39 They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing what Abraham did, 40 but now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41 You are indeed doing what your father does.” They said to him, “We are not illegitimate children; we have one father, God himself.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now I am here. I did not come on my own, but he sent me.

Reflection

The Gospel presents us with the theme of freedom, and of the true affiliation of man with regard to God the Father, seen from Abraham’s perspective. Jesus declares that an inherited faith is not enough for true freedom and legitimate filiation. He tells them that being of Abraham’s lineage does not guarantee them true freedom. “I assure you that whoever commits sin is a slave. And if the Son makes you free, you will be really free”.

 Christ sets us free by his word, “If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Truth sets you free and lies enslave. We must choose between one and the other.

 Christ Himself is the truth that makes us free from lies, and from sin. It is He, who establishes in us the authentic lineage of Abraham by faith. He makes us children of God and brothers of men. For this, we have to keep his word; otherwise, we will remain slaves to sin and lies, Abraham’s true children, the truly free ones, are those who imitate their faith and their attitudes before God, as Christ did.

In a world in which personal freedom is threatened, it is generally resultant of all kinds of worldly manipulation… Only with clear evangelical criteria and a mature faith are we able to testify with our lives and conduct that our only Father and Lord is the same God and father of Jesus Christ.

The martyrs and saints of all times attest to Jesus’ statement in today’s gospel: “If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

PRAYER

Lord God our Father, we want to follow Christ’s path to the cross, which will lead us to lift our voice in a hymn of blessing and victory with all those freed by the truth that is Christ.
